Editorial policy

From Reports reads published investigation reports and highlights concrete facts and exchanges that are easy to miss in news coverage.

Primary sources first

Core claims are based on published primary materials. Each note points to the relevant page. We do not fill gaps with speculation.

Different kinds of statements stay separate

We distinguish documented facts, statements made in interviews, findings or assessments by the investigating committee, company statements, and our own summaries.

Preserve meaning and context

Headlines and prose are edited for readability, but we do not add motives or conclusions that are absent from the source. When highlighting a striking passage, we check the surrounding context and avoid excerpts that change its meaning.

Select passages and provide a route back

We choose concrete exchanges and practices that can be traced in the source. We avoid repeating similar passages just to increase the note count. Figures need their subject, denominator and time period. Tables and timelines are labeled as our organization of the material and link to the supporting notes.

Check the edition and page

Displayed references use the original’s printed page numbers. Where covers or contents pages shift the PDF position, we check the link destination separately. Articles using an official English translation refer to that edition’s pages, rather than reusing Japanese page numbers.

AI assistance and publication decisions

AI assists with candidate extraction, drafting, translation and source comparison. AI output is not a source; published claims are checked against the original material. The operator makes the final decisions on report selection, note selection, publication and corrections.

What point in time an article covers

Articles normally cover the facts and assessments contained in the investigation report being discussed. They do not necessarily cover later regulatory action, litigation, follow-up investigations, or company responses. Material later additions are dated when added.

Editorial independence from advertising

Advertising, relationships with advertisers, and advertiser preferences do not influence report selection, note selection or editorial judgments in an article. Ordinary advertisers do not receive advance review or editorial control over articles.

Corrections

Errors are corrected. Material corrections are recorded in the article and on the corrections page.
